Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Our Mechanicsville office accepts Virginia Medicaid for children's dental care, including Cardinal Care Smiles (formerly Smiles For Children), DentaQuest and Doral. Medicaid families see the same doctors and get the same appointment times as everyone else. Learn more about pediatric dental care with Medicaid in Richmond.
Yes. Dr. Payton Cook sees orthodontic patients at our Mechanicsville office on Tuesdays, for braces, clear aligners and early treatment for kids, teens and adults. Orthodontic consultations are free, and every one includes a bite and airway check.
Our office is on Right Flank Road just off I-295, an easy drive for families in Mechanicsville, Atlee, Studley, Cold Harbor, Bell Creek and across Hanover County. Many of our patients also come from eastern Henrico County.
Our pediatric dentists see children from their very first tooth through the teen years. For orthodontics there is no upper age limit, so we treat kids, teens and adults at this office.
By their first birthday, or when the first tooth comes in, whichever comes first. That is the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's guidance. Here is what happens at your child's first visit.
Yes. Our team adapts visits for children with autism, sensory differences and other developmental or behavioral needs, and sedation options are available when they help. Tell us about your child when you book and we will plan the visit around them. Learn more about our special needs dental care.
Sedation can help children with special needs, kids with severe dental anxiety and patients who need a longer procedure stay comfortable and calm. We offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation, and we walk you through the options before anything is decided.
Bring your child in for an orthodontic check around age seven. By then there is a mix of baby and permanent teeth, which lets our orthodontist spot early problems. Most kids will not need treatment that young, and if it is too early, we will tell you.
Every case is different, so treatment can be shorter or longer depending on what your child needs. Your orthodontist will give you an accurate timeline at the free consultation.
Supervise brushing and flossing, even after your child can do it alone. Use fluoride toothpaste twice a day for two minutes, floss once a day, keep sugary snacks and drinks to a minimum, and keep up with checkups every six months.
